It is extremely unlikely that your dog will catch colds from someone else. You may worry that your dog will get a cold from you if you have a cough or a sniffle. But it is unlikely. The common cold virus infects humans, but dogs are immune.

How to treat a dog with a cold or flu?

These are some things you can do at your home to help your dog recover from a cold.



Warm food for your dog

Dogs might have difficulty smelling the food or enjoying it due to the congested nose that comes with a cold. Warming the food is a good idea. The dog food will smell better and be easier to eat.


Use a humidifier

Increase the humidity in the air to make it easier for your dog, especially when sleeping.

Make sure your dog is well hydrated.

Dogs with colds must be hydrated to ensure their recovery. Make sure to check your dog’s water bowl regularly and ensure they are getting enough fluids. You can give your dog chicken soup to replenish its fluids.



Give your dog plenty of time to rest.

Take your dog for walks every day at a leisurely pace, and don’t exercise too much while they are recovering from a cold. You might see them snoring more than usual. They need to get plenty of sleep during this time.

A cold can have symptoms similar to other serious illnesses, so it’s essential to see a veterinarian for a complete checkup.
