Jack Russell Rat Terriers
Naming a jack Russell rat terrier may sound easy, but itâs not. Calling a pet or a dog, in general, is not an easy task, but not impossible either. Usually, a jack Russell rat terrier is quite demanding for the owner, and it needs lots of love and attention. The average age of rat terriers is seven years, which means that they have to adapt well to the changes in their surroundings, especially children. The coat of a jack Russell rat terrier is hard and wire-haired.

What is the Jack Rat Terrier Breed History?
Jack Rat Terriers were developed in the late 1980s by breeding small dog âJack Russell terrierâ with homeless and turned-in black and tan puppies from a puppy mill. Around 1990, breeder Tony Benusis introduced these crossbreds (Jack Russel x Black & Tan) into the show ring at one of the early Rat Terrier Club of America conformation shows held in California. The judge for that particular breed event was John Povinelli, who is working on a âminiatureâ version of every breed and even did some work on his version of what today is called the Jack Rat Terrier Breed.
To prevent further disqualification from the official Jack Russell Terrier Breed Standard, which was set in 1987 by the American Kennel Club, this ânoveltyâ breed was given a new name: Jack Rat Terrier. The name âJack Rat Terrierâ is a registered trademark for this RAT TERRIER breed by Tony Benusis and has been since 1991. Other people have copied the name to mislead people into believing they are breeding True Jack Rat terriers without paying royalties for this use of the trademarked name.

Hybrid Breeds.
Jack Rat dogâs were originally bred by farmers to be the best pest hunter. Different farmers used different breeds, which meant that the Rat Terrier had more than seven ingredients. These included Smooth Fox Terrier (now extinct), the now-extinct Old English White Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Bull Terrier, Whippet, Italian Greyhound, and Beagle. Rat Terriers could be faster and more effective in controlling the Midwestâs jackrabbit problem by having Whippets and Italian Greyhounds. Rat Terriers were given superior pack hunting abilities by adding beagles.

Grooming.
Every six to eight weeks, the coat needs to be hand brushed to remove any dead hair. Also, because most jack rat terriers shed their coat regularly, grooming them once a month should be sufficient. Some jack rat terriers are even bred with miniature dachshunds or toy rats to make it easier to keep them groomed.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) gives rat terriers their name because they are so used to being used as service or show dogs. Because of this, their agility, obedience, tracking, herding, and rescue work is often listed in their breed information. In addition, the AKC has specific criteria for breeding dogs, and only shows dogs if they pass the breed standards. The standards required to become a member of the AKC are not generally difficult to meet, but you should always check with your local AKC chapter to make sure that your potential dog meets the breed requirements.
