How often should you bathe a Shih Tzu?

The frequency of bathing a Shih Tzu dog breed should be based on their individual Shih Tzu grooming needs. Generally speaking, it is recommended to bathe Shih Tzus every four to six weeks using a high-quality shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for dogs. If necessary, due to excessive dirt or odor, you can bathe more frequently as needed. Additionally, brushing your Shih Tzu’s coat regularly will help keep their fur clean and reduce the need for frequent baths. After bathing, dry your Shih Tzu thoroughly with a towel and use a blow-dryer set on low heat for best results. This helps prevent matting in their fur and skin irritation from excess moisture. Lastly, always provide plenty of fresh water for your Shih Tzu to drink after a bath. This helps keep them hydrated and replenish essential electrolytes lost during bathing.

How to dry your Shih Tzu?

Depending on your Shih Tzu’s preferences, you can decide whether to towel dry or blow dry.

Whit towel dry. If your dog has short hair or a shorter coat, you can towel dry him. To absorb extra water, gently pat the coat with a soft towel.

You should not rub your hair with a towel. This can cause split ends and can also lead to hair tangles. If you do this often, it can cause damage to the hair. Apply leave-in conditioner to the entire coat after you have finished rubbing it. A leave-in conditioner will soften his cuticles and make his long hair and longer coat smoother. Let your Shih Tzu air dry after that. It shouldn’t be too cold for him.

Blow-dry – You can blow-dry your coat by separating it with your sleeves. Then spray the coat with the leave-in you choose. The bottle should be about five to six inches from the coat.

Use your two-level brush to untangle the hairs from the roots to their tips. Once you have separated all hairs and the conditioner has been evenly distributed through the coat of hair, turn on the blow dryer and let it warm up. Dry the hair at a distance between five and six inches. Blow dry your hair as usual. Move side-to-side, and then use your pin brush to separate the hair.
