History.

The Akita Inu Hozonkai (AKIHO) was founded in 1927 as the first Akita preservation organization. The Akita Inu was declared a natural monument in 1931. A newspaper published a story in 1932 about Hachiko’s loyalty to Professor Ueno. This story was famous all over the world. On a 1937 tour of Japan, Helen Keller expressed her love for Hachiko’s story and was presented with an Akita by the Japanese government. Keller’s Kamikaze, a puppy of Kamikaze, was the first Akita brought to America. Kenzan was the second.

The Akita suffered during World War II when many civilians could not take care of their pets. In Japan, the government confiscated dogs that weren’t involved in military operations. Many dogs were killed because of their coats. The breed was saved by a handful of dedicated owners who kept their Akitas safe in rural Tohoku mountain villages at their own risk. Japanese sources claim that there were only 18 purebred Akita left. Japanese breeders started a second phase to restore the breed after the war. While some lines were imported to America and became the American Akita, the Japanese breeders focused on other lines to restore the breed’s status as one of the Nihonken (native Japanese breeds).
