Dachshund lab mix is a mix that results from the cross of Labrador Retriever and Dachshund. The Dachshund Lab mix is an uncommon mixed breed dog. Also, this mix has only started gaining traction over the past few years, with the rise of the mix breed trend. It would help if you did plenty of research before welcoming a Dachshund Labrador hybrid breed into the family. Let’s start with some quick stats about this cross.

Lab.

The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the United States, based on registration statistics obtained by the American Kennel Club. This breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1917 and originated in Newfoundland.

Labrador retrievers are sturdy, solid dogs. Also, they are almost square in appearance, with strong bodies and sturdy legs. Males can reach 24 inches in height, placing them in the medium-sized dog category.

However, their strong build can make them appear larger. The weight ranges from 85 to 55 pounds for large males and 55 pounds for smaller females. The Labrador retrievers’ large heads, expressive eyes, and drop ears make them stand out from other field-bred dogs. The Lab’s trademark features are its thick, but short, double coat that is water-repellent and well-known “ottertail”.

Dachshund.

The Dachshund is described as clever, lively, and courageous to the point of rashness. The small, spunky Dachshund (pronounced dahkshund) is easily recognized by its long, stubby body and long legs. They are a long-standing family favorite. Because of their small size and low maintenance requirements, they can adapt to almost any environment.

Dachshunds are known for being a badger dog and hund dog. However, the 15th century has illustrations of Dachshunds, while documents from the 16th century refer to them as the “earth dog”, “badger creeper” and “dachsel”. Dachshunds make a wonderful addition to any family, which is why they have ranked near the top of most popular dog lists since the 1950s. In1885, Dachshunds made it to America and were registered with the American Kennel Club.

Temperament.

The Dachshund Labrador mix has very different personalities, and a hybrid pup could be like either purebred parent! Some traits are shared, making it more likely that your puppy will inherit them. For instance, both the Labrador and the Dachshund are intelligent dogs.

Both are likely to form very strong bonds with their close family. But, the way this is expressed may differ. Labs tend to love everyone, as well as their family. But, Dachshunds are more often territorial over their family members, which can lead to aggression.

Health issues.

Dachshund lab mixes are generally healthy dogs. A poor breeding process can lead to many health problems in the puppy. Some breeding facilities may have used unhealthy parents to create dachshund mix. These are some things to be aware of:

  • Cataracts
  • Arthritis
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Exercise-induced collapse
  • Gastric Dilatation Volvulus
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy

Some other less frequent issues include seizures, which usually come from Dachshund parents, and skin problems.

Coat and color.

The Labrador retriever parent has a double-layered coat with dense, water-resistant fur. In contrast, Dachshunds can have three coat types: smooth, longhaired, or wirehaired. Smooth Dachshunds have short, glossy coats, longhaired varieties have longer, wavier fur, and wirehaired varieties have coarse fur that is short over most of their body.

In terms of color, the Lab is available in black, chocolate, or solid yellow shades. Dachshunds are much more varied, with more unusual patterns like brindle and dapple also popular. This mix could inherit any of this coloring.

Grooming.

Your Labrador cross with Dachshund can be groomed depending on its coat type. These mixed breed dog’s can inherit any of the coat types from their two parent breeds. So, you should familiarize yourself with the appropriate coat type and learn how best to groom it.

Generally, the Dachshund Lab mix will be a moderate to high-shedding dog. They are not hypoallergenic and may trigger allergy symptoms in people that usually suffer from dog allergies.

Exercise and Training.

Both parent breed’s are very intelligent so that they can pick up training quickly. However, the Dachshunds dog breed can have an independent streak. If this passes to your puppy, training can take a little longer. Positive reinforcement methods are the best way to work with your pup and reduce the risk of stubbornness. Avoid punishment techniques, as these can result in aggression and regression in training!

The exercise needs of these pup’s will vary from one to the next. Those with longer legs and shorter backs, like the Lab, can partake in a broader range of exercise styles. But dogs with short legs and long backs of the Dachshund should avoid jumping and rough play. It’s wise to include swimming and fetch activities to improve swimming abilities and agility.

Are They Good With Children and other pets?

Homes with very small children or other pets might not suit this mix, especially if the dog takes after its Dachshund parent. These dogs can be aggressive and territorial. So, owners must be ready to dedicate lots of time to socialization and training from a young age.

Are they good family pets?

For some families, the Lab Dachshund mix can be a good fit. However, these puppies can vary, so owners should be prepared to accept any potential outcome. Because of this, there’s no real way of knowing exactly how much space a dog will take up or what exact care they will need before they are fully grown at your home.

Conclusion.

Dachshund Lab mix are friendly and super social dogs who will be a big hit with families. Also, the most common color of these hybrid breed’s are chocolate brown, black, and yellow. Dachsador dogs and children are a great fit for each other. The mixed breed is friendly and playful and loves to participate in play sessions with the kids. Play time should still always be supervised.
