Doris Cordova, a Californian woman, started breeding Aussies in the 1960s to make them smaller and easier to travel with.

Sally Kennedy and Bill Kennedy placed Spike, one of her Mini Aussies. They fell in love instantly with the dog, and they continued to breed Minis. Chas Lasater, a fellow dog breeder and horseman from Valhalla Kennels, also started to breed Mini Aussies. The Mini Aussie was created by Cordova, Lasater, and the Kennedys. They were relatively rare at the time, so several clubs promoted them and they became increasingly popular.
